I know for a lot of people birthdays are just another number and just another day. Yes, the older I get the more that number part is really sticking out. But why not celebrate? Life is short. My philosophy is to use whatever excuse I have to celebrate every occasion life brings my way!
Matthew turned the big 3-0 this summer and we had our family over to celebrate. Of course, Matthew wanted a simple little gathering at the house. Nothing fancy or too big. And that’s just the thing- celebrations don’t have to be big or fancy. I love the simplicity of a home gathering with those you love. After all, it’s the people you share these special occasions with that matter the most.
I have always had a thing for pretty paper napkins. I may or may not have several plastic bins full of these beauties. They are inexpensive and it’s easy to find a style that fits the occasion. When planning an occasion, I usually pick my napkin design/colors first and use that as the foundation for the rest of the décor. For me, this is a fun place to start. Find something that inspires you. Maybe its Grandma’s china, your child’s favorite toy, or the trip you took last summer. Find what makes you smile and use that as your inspiration to build your celebration.
Once I’ve found that inspirational piece, I work on a color scheme. For this gathering you will notice that I chose navy and gold. I usually make sure that any remaining colors, say that come from serving wear or floral arrangements, are more neutral and compliment my “primary colors.” In this case, I used the green in the tablescape and Martinelli glasses, and the silver chargers to compliment the navy and gold. Choosing a color scheme helps keep the space from becoming overwhelming and cluttered.
Since we had Matthew’s birthday at our home, I focused on a simple tablescape and buffet table. I found the perfect napkins at one of my favorite little boutiques, Menage Stationary and used cookies from The Whimsey Cookie Company to set my Pottery Barn plates and chargers apart from any other dinner night. I then added a fresh gorgeous tulip arrangement to the center table and voilà!
On the buffet table, I placed a navy linen tablecloth and a floral arrangement. Linen is such a great way to dress things up! Serving your food on white dishes in different shapes and sizes keeps things simple and clean.
Although I am sure there are official rules to planning and decorating special occasions, the above is how I personally approach my celebrations. The bottom line when planning any celebration is to keep things simple and stay true to you. And don’t forget the cake!
